As you guys know, we are creeping up on our closing date and will be moving into Our Dream Home soon! My Mom Moving mode is on another level as I packed up a house full of kids, pets and years of memories. It was no easy task but as I tried to stay calm, organized and relaxed during this transition, I thought I could also round up some helpful tips I figured out during the process.
The first step is to remain CALM. Moving can be overwhelming and the to-do list seems unbearable sometimes. Just try to keep your mind focused on the end goal. Getting you and your family into your new space and having a fresh start! It’s important to eliminate unnecessary items and I like using the Marie Kondo method. If is doesn’t spark joy, get rid of it! How simple is that?! I compile a Keep, Trash and Donate pile and go through the keep pile twice just to really consider each item we are bringing to the new house.
Next step is begin packing up everything you do not use on a regular basis. Decorations, Holiday Items, out of season clothing etc. The closer you get to the move in date, the less and less you should need to keep out and will use.
For packing, use towels, blankets or any other big pieces of fabrics to wrap breakables in. This kills two birds with one stone and eliminates the need for wasteful packing beans or bubble wrap.
Use a dolly! This protects your back and allows you to make less trips in a shorter amount of time! Work smart, not hard! You will thank me later.
Keep clothes on their hangers and pack in hanging boxes or garbage bags (by poking the hangers through the bottom). I found nifty boxes that allow you to hang clothes right inside. I plan to buy enough for each closet and label where they go. This way, we easily transfer them to everyone’s new closets without having to rehang everything.
Prepare a necessities box that will house any items you will need until the very last day in your old home as well as tools for packing.
My box includes:
Flat head and Phillips Head Screw Driver
So there you have it! Helpful tips to have a stress free successful move! Remember, change is a good thing and as overwhelmed as you may become, just remember you can do this!
